The High-Energy Edge: Four Ways to Fight Fatigue

Fatigue is a universal feeling we can all relate to, along with the temptation to seek a shortcut or supplement that will give us more energy—a vitamin, or energy drink, or caffeine. Rather than looking for an outside source, consider that our own bodies have the power within already. Strive to get the basics right by addressing these four culprits, rather than ignoring them and looking for an outside source of energy.

  1. Sleep Deprivation
It’s common practice to steal nighttime hours for daytime activities and to underestimate the value of sleep. Did you know that sleep deprivation accelerates the aging process, weakens your immune system, and hinders memory consolidation? We feel so much better when we set and stick to a regular sleep schedule.

  2. Stress
Stress takes quite a toll on the body, both physically and psychologically. Anyone who’s had the experience of a significant stressor knows that it utterly drains you. Daily, run-of-the-mill stress also has an impact, releasing higher rates of unhealthy hormones and zapping our energy. Be sure to buffer yourself by taking time for relaxation. A massage or other spa treatment could be just what the doctor ordered.

  3. Dehydration
Fluids play a crucial role in almost all bodily functions, yet many of us go hours without drinking anything when we’re busy. Plain water is the best source of hydration—free of calories, sugar, and caffeine. When we are serious about increasing our energy level, and improving our skin, muscles, brain function, and more, we will make a plan to stay hydrated.
  4. Inactivity
Nature’s own remedy for fatigue is exercise and it doesn’t cost a cent. Exercise equals energy, period. There is nothing quite like moving your muscles to get oxygen into your lungs and coursing through your body. If you’re not currently exercising, even a little will help – walking more is a great start.

Give some new habits a try. You’ve got nothing to lose, and plenty of energy to gain! We all want more energy. Commit to going back to the basics - it works!
